Owens reiterates call for OPOTA Director resignation
COLUMBUS, OHIO - Independent attorney general candidate Robert Owens today restated his call for the resignation of the Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy (OPOTA) Executive Director Tomi Lynn Dorris.
Dorris terminated her campaign for Franklin County Prosecutor after Owens’ initial appeal for her resignation last week. Owens believes there is compelling information that suggests Dorris acted outside the law in her official capacity, possibly in an attempt to aid her now-defunct campaign for county prosecutor.
“The OPOTA Director, by her own admission, overstepped her authority on at least one occasion,” Owens said. “This is one of the most important positions within the office of the Attorney General. Dorris claims she never wanted the job, and that Marc Dann should not have appointed her over her objections. Now, she has the chance to do what she wanted to in the first place - leave OPOTA.”
The Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission (OPOTC) is the lead state agency responsible for training and establishing training standards for police officers, private security, and other law enforcement related positions. Dorris was appointed by Marc Dann, who ignored a unanimous Training Commission recommendation of another candidate for the post.
Owens is running on a campaign theme of “Integrity for a Change,” promising to aggressively fight corruption in state government, and deal more effectively with issues of urban crime.
