I want to personally thank our dedicated staff members and many volunteers for their tireless efforts throughout the campaign. Together, we convinced more than 230,000 citizens to break with entrenched party politics to support our candidacy. Our campaign for attorney general was the most successful independent race for statewide executive office in Ohio history.

During the course of the campaign, we brought public attention to a number of important issues affecting the people of Ohio

We exposed pay to play political tools like no bid contracts and slush funds costing Ohio citizens millions.

We exposed the illegal actions of a political operative in the Attorney General’s office that put thousands of criminal cases in jeopardy.

We put forward a positive community action plan, including an agenda to address issues particularly in urban areas such as an abortion rate 5X times higher in inner city areas.

Over the course of five debates, our campaign addressed substantive issues to advance a pro-freedom, pro-business, pro-family, pro-community message.

I was grateful to see the other candidates follow our leadership by beginning to address some of these issues near the end of the campaign. When I spoke with Mr. Cordray on election evening, I encouraged him to make these issues a priority. We will be watching very closely to make sure that he does.

As our plans for the future take shape, we will make you aware of our next battle on behalf of the people of Ohio. Thank you again for your support!

In Liberty,

Robert Owens

“I congratulated Mr. Cordray on his victory,” Owens said, addressing supporters gathered in downtown Columbus. “And I encouraged him to seriously consider some of the issues we raised in our campaign to better serve the people of Ohio.”

Based on early returns, Owens was expected to achieve approximately 5% of the final vote in the attorney general race, the highest total for any Independent or third party candidate for statewide executive office in the last twenty-five years.

DELAWARE, OHIO - Robert Owens, the Independent candidate for Ohio attorney general, is urging all Ohioans to vote “NO” on Issue 5. A “NO” on Issue 5 would repeal legislation that crushes payday lending businesses and will kill more than 6,000 jobs across Ohio.

“First and foremost, this is about fundamental economic freedom - for consumers and small business,” said Owens. “People hurting in this economy should not have to choose between bouncing a check, going to a pawnshop, or patronizing underworld loan sharks. If someone needs an emergency loan they must have a lawful way to get one.”

In two broadcast debates, Owens sharply criticized both his opponents in the Attorney General race who have publicly supported Issue 5. Owens alleges the party representative candidates were influenced by contributions from large banking interests.

A study by the Federal Reserve Bank found that when the state of Georgia enacted similar legislation, banks collected an additional $36 million in bounced check fees.

Video news footage of all three candidates’ position on Issue 5 can be found online at owens2008.com/issue5

The following was released today by the Ohio Coalition of Concerned Citizens

The Coalition, formerly known as the Coalition of Concerned Black Citizens, has progressively and effectively engaged in the process of screening and recommending candidates seeking to be elected to a public office since 1992.

The primary objective of the groups screening process is to identify and support, on behalf of the public, qualified and highly qualified potential and current public office candidates. The Ohio Coalition of Concerned Citizens completed its 16th year of screening political candidates and issuing voter recommendations in February of 2008. At that time the office of Ohio’s Attorney General was not in play.

The Coalition Highly Recommends Robert Owens for the office of Ohio Attorney General and encourages Ohio voters to support a real change for reform regarding the operations of the Attorney General’s office by casting their vote for Robert Owens.

Robert Owens stands in agreement with The Coalition on many issues especially, The Coalition’s opposition to the Ohio Department of Homeland Security and other state agencies whom are subject to the advisement of current AG Nancy H. Rogers, illegal intentions, to tax and regulate private businesses and individuals that provide security to protect their own private property and private assets. Why are they doing this? To generate funds for their respective government operations.

To date, The Coalition’s observations of the AG’s race is that the media has been overly biased with their coverage leaning, at the expense of decreased public awareness on many issues, in favor of AG candidates selected by the political parties. The Coalition has also observed that the AG candidates selected by the political parties refuse to address issues outside of the Marc Dann scandal.

Ohio needs a political independent Attorney General. The political parties have too big a financial stake in allowing many things to change from the way that they are today, and in the past, in furtherance of good government. In this election for Attorney General of the State of Ohio Robert Owens, the Independent Candidate is the only real choice to vote for if one really wants things to change in the AG’s office and operations.

COLUMBUS, OHIO – Attorney General candidate Robert Owens released a statement today supporting the Franklin County Homeowner Helpline as a leading program to assist Ohioans facing foreclosure. Owens also praised the mediation program initiated by Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas Moyer.

“This is exactly the kind of voluntary assistance that should be available to help so many Ohio homeowners that are struggling,” said Owens.

Former prosecutor Robert Owens, speaking after a press conference about the Helpline on Tuesday, said the ready answers and encouragement would be the kind of programs an Attorney General Owens’ administration would initiate to avoid expensive litigation and protect consumers.

“As Attorney General, we would keep a pool of in-house attorneys who have specific expertise to assist county prosecutors with fraud prosecution, ensuring business complies with Ohio law,” Owens declared. “With more than 7,000 foreclosures in Franklin County this year alone, this problem requires the care and attention of public officials.”

Owens is a leader among Delaware County private practice attorneys in pro bono defense of foreclosure victims. In his current race for Attorney General, Owens has supported grassroots assistance, public leadership, and local counseling programs. He stated that mortgage holders and banks should be required to send a representative to mediation who is authorized to make payment, interest rate, and loan balance modifications.

Owens took issue, though, with his opponent Richard Cordray’s July 17 mis-characterization of mortgage premium rebates.

“The Democratic Party representative in my race is wrong in his peddling of increased regulation of yield-spread premiums,” said Owens. “We need common sense in office - and to crush law-abiding small business is not the answer to our current crisis. Such unnecessary intrusions go far beyond legitimate oversight and prosecuting fraud. These are misguided and reckless statements that, if enacted, will cause even fewer Ohioans to enjoy stable home ownership.”

Owens will participate in a debate of the attorney general candidates on Wednesday at the Metropolitan Club of Columbus.

After four debates of the candidates for Ohio Attorney General, the Republican Party candidate has us asking: is Mike Crites in the tank for Richard Cordray? Is this a political campaign or WWF wrestling?

In the first debate, the headline described how much Crites agreed with Cordray.

In two other debates, Cordray went after Crites - once so wrongheaded that he earned a hand slap from the Bar Association. But Crites refuses to say anything directly against the corruption of the Democratic party representative.

Oh sure, he doesn’t mind passively putting out negative campaign ads. He’ll even allow his campaign to file an ethics complaint. But, apparently Mike doesn’t much like hand-to-hand combat.

Indeed, it’s looking more and more like Crites has turned in a performance worthy of the Washington Generals - staying in the game, but playing to let the Globetrotters win.

Not since current Lt. Governor Lee Fisher was Ohio’s Attorney General, has an Attorney General aggressively taken on special issues and challenges specifically facing Ohio’s major urban communities. Robert Owens as the people’s Attorney General would not be found Missing In Action.

According to U.S. Justice Department statistics, urban residents had the highest rates of violent crime victimization. Forty-eight percent (48%) of all robberies, the offender used a weapon. Fifty-five percent (55%) of all homicides were committed with handguns. Many citizens do not know their legal rights regarding self-defense.

Too many citizens, because of lack of knowledge regarding Ohio’s laws, go defenseless and become victims needlessly. Most crimes are crimes of opportunity. The most effective way to minimize the potential for crimes is to minimize the opportunity for crimes to occur. And when crime goes down, everyone is more free to pursue the American Dream of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness!

As your Attorney General, Robert Owens will educate urban residents specifically regarding their legal rights to effectively protect themselves, their love ones, and their property. He also will target the source of crime in cooperation with community leaders. In America, sixty-one percent (61%) of all reported hate crime incidents were motivated by race.

Citizens of Ohio have waited long enough for an Attorney General who will champion the issues and challenges facing our respective communities. They deserve an Attorney General who will not serve merely as a stepping stone for his ambitions for the Governor’s mansion, being supported and propelled politically as the prize stock of the Republican or Democratic Party.

Whether you vote early, absentee, or on November 4 — Vote for Robert Owens as your Attorney General!

As Your Attorney General, I will fight for you - the people of Ohio.

Here is my Action Plan to implement a true Community Agenda:

1. Cut off the primary tools of pay to play politics such as no bid contracts and slush funds.

2. Aggressively lower violent crime - and put an emphasis on solving violent crimes - by working with community leaders especially in urban areas.

3. Restore law enforcement trust in the law enforcement support agencies, such as the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA).

4. Dramatically expand government transparency and enforce Ohio’s open records laws

Attorney General is an important position in Ohio - we need a leader with a knowledge and love of the law, the people, and the Constitution.

I am running to give the people of Ohio a voice in state government. For too long, the big-money special interests have been the only voices heard by Republican and Democratic party representatives.
